Statis Pro baseball is a baseball simulation board game combining the best of fantasy baseball with the element of chance. It was created in 1970 by Jim Barnes, a newspaper columnist in Iowa. Avalon Hills produced the game starting in 1978 and produced cards for every season until a licensing dispute with Major League Baseball caused them to cease production in 1992. There is a thriving online community of enthusiasts who still make and sell cards for every season, as well as advanced rules, updated charts, and other new and interesting changes to the game.
The game is rather simple, but most aspects of baseball are included, such as bunting, stealing, tagging up, and hitting and running and the results are actually very reasonable. The game can be played with dice or a deck of cards with random results. These results are then read off of the pitchers’ and batters’ cards. A 9 inning game can be played in about an hour.
