Congratulations to Jorge Acevedo!

The Inaugural Season is over and the Philadelphia Phillies of 2008 have won the Championship convincingly.  They absolutely dominated in the playoffs going 5-0 by sweeping the 1970 Orioles 2-0 and then the 1976 Reds 3-0.  Nobody thought the 2008 Phillies were going to be able to compete with some of the all-time great teams selected to play in this league, but all year they proved us wrong.

Below are the final standing including the playoff games.  See for yourself how dominant the Phillies really were after all the games had been played.

Also Congratulations to the MVP Award winner, Jimmie Foxx of the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics and the Cy Young Award winner, Cole Hamels of the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies.

Base Running

I am considering a change for next season on the base running on base hits. As you know, currently you have to decide whether or not to send a runner from first to third on a single or from second to home on a single, etc. If you are unsuccessful, you are out.  As I watched the season unfold, it seemed a lot of us were reluctant to make this decision and the feedback about this was that this aspect of the game was not very realistic.
I found another way to do this.  This would involve settling up the runner after every hit with men on base.  You would have to send him.  The results would be 1, he goes first to third, 2, he goes first to second and 3, with a small probability (81-88), there would be a challenge.
On a challenge, the offense must send the runner, while the defense has an option to throw for the out or cut the throw.  If he cuts, the trail runner is out, while the lead runner advances.  On the throw, it works exactly like we have it now.
I think the newer option might make base running more realistic, but I have received some interesting feedback about game management.  We, as managers, already have relatively few decisions in the actual game.  This would take one more decision out of our hands.

First 2 Games of A’s – Reds Series

The A’s – Reds playoffs series has been awesome so far.  The Reds took Game 1 5-4 in a back and forth battle. The A’s came back strong in Game 2 to win 11-6.  One thing lacking so far in this series is pitching.

Pivotal Game 3 will be played soon.

Phillies – O’s get underway tonight.

The Orioles defeated the Pirates 6-2 tonight.  Palmer was shaky early but settled down and then the bull pen was unhittable from the 6th inning on.  Is it the bull pen that wins championships or starting pitching?

Here’s how round 2 will be played:

Game 1: 

(3) A’s @ (2) Reds
(4) Orioles @ (1) Phillies

Game 2:

(2) Reds @ (3) A’s
(1) Phillies @ (4) Orioles

Game 3 (if Necessary):

(3) A’s @ (2) Reds

Everybody has 2 weeks from this Sunday to complete the games (through Oct 10).

First Playoff Result

A’s defeated the Yankees tonight 7-5.  After Lefty Grove started the game and couldn’t seem to buy an out and fell behind 5-1, Howard Ehmke came in and pitched 6 scoreless frames.  Meanwhile the A’s number 1 offense chipped away at Whitey Ford and slowly came back capping it off with a 4 run 7th.

The Pirates – Orioles game will be played in the next couple of days.

The next round will consist of (2) Reds – (3) A’s and can start as soon as the owners can get together.  The other series will be winner of (5) Pirates – (4) Orioles and the (1) Phillies.

Don’t forget to vote for MVP – to help you decide, Foxx hit the game winning HR tonight follow by another bomb for insurance by Al Simmons….(am I allowed to say that?)

Some commentary to go along with the stats…feel free to comment yourselves, too.  It looks like in Statis Pro, as in real baseball, pitching is huge.  Look at our 1 and 2 seeds and where they rank in pitching. Of course hitting matters too, as the Yankees came in last with a respectable pitching performance but dead last hitting, and the A’s came in 3rd with dead last pitching but far out hitting everybody.  

Playoffs should be interesting.
